SUSTAINABILITY
Transparency and disclosure
As a founding contributor to the development of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), Gold Fields is committed to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in tailings governance.
The GISTM is the first universal standard applicable to both existing and future tailings storage facilities (TSFs). It integrates social, environmental, economic, and technical considerations across the full TSF lifecycle - from design and operation to closure and post-closure.

What we disclose
To support public accountability and stakeholder trust, Gold Fields has published the following documents:
To provide a single source of truth, we have prepared a consolidated disclosure report covering all active, legacy, and closed TSFs. This report satisfies the full requirements of GISTM Principle 15 and includes site-specific data for all 37 TSFs across our global portfolio. This report will be updated annually and will form part of the Gold Fields Annual reporting cycle.

This brief, visual summary presents conformance dashboards for each of the 219 GISTM criteria across all 37 TSFs, representing over 8,000 data points in total. These assessments are conducted at the criteria level, not only at the principle level, to enable greater rigour and transparency.
Each facility is rated as:
(Note: Gold Fields does not apply "Meets with a Plan" in conformance assessments.)

For credibility and independence of our conformance reporting, Gold Fields appointed a qualified third-party assurance provider to rigorously assess our self-assessments against the 219 criteria of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).
This verification covered our global TSF portfolio and involved a multi-stage assurance process, including:
Comprehensive document reviews
Site visits and interviews with technical teams and accountable executives
Validation of asset-specific evidence
Integrated collaboration across technical, operational, and governance functions
Importantly, Gold Fields engaged independent assurance professionals - not engineering firms - to perform this work. The GISTM requires an interdisciplinary approach, and verification demands a unique skill set that combines governance, assurance, and performance auditing capabilities.
Note: The assurance process is distinct from a technical review. It does not assess the engineering suitability of designs or reports. These aspects are managed through our governance systems, including oversight by the Engineer of Record (EoR), Independent Tailings Review Boards (ITRBs), and other Senior Independent Technical Reviewers.
The outcome of this process is an Independent Assurance Report, providing an independent assessment of the reasonableness and authenticity of the disclosures made in relation to Gold Fields’ self-assessed conformance of the selected TSFs against the GISTM.

Gold Fields supports initiatives that drive greater transparency in the mining sector. In 2019, we responded to a request from the Church of England Pensions Board and the Swedish Council on Ethics for the AP Funds, providing detailed disclosures on our approach to tailings, post-incident improvements, and our global TSF inventory.
