Foundations and Trusts

Gold Fields funds and works with a number of associated foundations and community trusts to deliver social investment projects that share value created by our operations with host communities.

In South Africa we collaborate with the trustees of the independent South Deep Education Trust, the South Deep Community Trust and the Westonaria Community Trust to facilitate more effective delivery of projects that benefit host and labour sending communities. The South Deep Education Trust and the South Deep Community Trust, together with the employee-based Thusano Trust, were established as part of South Deep’s 2010 Black Economic Empowerment initiative.

In Australia and Ghana our community initiatives are channelled through the Gold Fields Australia Foundation and the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation respectively. The trustees of these foundations comprise independent representatives as well as representatives from Gold Fields.

Below is a brief profile of the trusts and foundations that Gold Fields works with.

Westonaria Community Trust

Purpose:

The beneficiaries will be Historically Disadvantaged South Africa (HDSA) people primarily from the Westonaria mining community (now the South Deep Mining Community). Once the socio economic needs of this community have been addressed, then the beneficiaries could be members of other needy HDSA communities as determined by the Trustees.

The general objectives of the Trusts are:

  • To facilitate the empowerment and development of previously disadvantaged and economically marginalised people in accordance with the Mining Charter and its scorecard (with a special focus on women and people with disabilities). This is achieved by forging unique partnerships between local municipal structures and social entrepreneurial initiatives in the community and business;
  • To strive towards compliance with the provisions of the South African government’s Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment ambitions in respect of broad based ownerships schemes and trusts;
  • To encourage the establishment, development and support of sustainable new enterprises in the South Deep mining community;
  • To improve the quality of life of people in the Westonaria mining community through building of capacity, skills development and education;
  • To facilitate the developments of markets of growth for enterprises;
  • To work with local enterprises and/or municipalities to promote ecological rehabilitation, sound environmental planning and resource utilisation, facilitation of economic upliftment, business opportunities and regional and institutional co-operation.

The WCT is currently dormant. The WCT will be wound up during 2019 once the audits for 2018 and 2019 are finalised by KPMG and closed out accounts have been drafted and submitted with the Master.

The Westonaria Community Trust transferred the amount of R12 000 000.00 to the South Deep Education Trust, to be ring-fenced and to be utilised specifically for the purpose of building a TVET college in Westonaria. Representatives of the WCT are still, and will in future be actively involved in the planning and execution of the building of the TVET college. The WCT is a funder together with other funders for this project.
