Our communities and government

HIGHLIGHTS DURING 2019

  • Almost US$2.6bn paid in value creation to key stakeholders, including over US$250m in taxes and royalties to our host governments
  • A third of our total value creation – US$782m – is with our host communities through host community employment, procurement and project investment
  • Almost 11,000 host community jobs are in our mine value chain – employees, contractors, suppliers and non-mining jobs
  • Over 675 companies, mostly SMMEs, based in our communities supply goods and services to our mines around the world
  • Completed our largest Shared Value project to date – tarring and rebuilding the 33km road between Tarkwa and Damang in Ghana at a cost of US$27m with significant socioeconomic benefits for about 100,000 community members

BENEFITS FOR STAKEHOLDERS
AND ADDRESSING THEIR CONCERNS:

Host communities are one of Gold Fields’ most important stakeholder groups – by creating socioeconomic benefits for them through our various Shared Value programme, particularly host community employment and procurement, we create the foundation for long-term value creation in our communities that should continue beyond mine closure. Taxes and royalties – if utilised appropriately – allow governments to develop critical infrastructure for the benefit of the country as well as our host communities.

HOW OUR PROJECTS ARE POSITIVELY IMPACTING HOST COMMUNITIES

Our focus is not so much on spend, but on how our various projects deliver real impact to host community members. View these videos to learn from beneficiaries how we are making a positive difference in their lives.
