Netball in WA celebrates first three months with Gold Industry Group - Gold Industry Group
The Gold Industry Group is backing netball in Western Australia with a commitment of $5 million over three years - the single largest investment in the sport’s 95-year history.
This partnership is the first of its kind in supporting all levels of the sport across the State as the first Principal Partner of Netball WA, Elite Partner of West Coast Fever and Premier Partner of Shooting Stars.
The partnership will generate real benefit for our communities in both metropolitan Perth and the remote regions; change the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls living in some of Western Australia’s most remote communities; empower 230,000 participants across WA to take control of their netball destiny and shape their journey; support the growth of and increase participation in netball; and elevate women’s sport and diversity and inclusion in the wider community.
It further cements the Gold Industry Group as a leader in diversity both in the resources industry and the broader WA community, enabling it to work with Netball WA to create a clear pathway for participants to gain employment in the gold industry, pursue higher education opportunities and become leaders and role models within the sector.
GIG members supporting the landmark partnership include Gold Fields, Northern Star Resources, Saracen Mineral Holdings, Newcrest Mining, St Barbara Limited, Newmont Goldcorp Australia, AngloGold Ashanti Australia, Gold Road Resources and Ramelius Resources.
Gold miners have been backing netball in WA since mid-2018, when Saracen Mineral Holdings assisted in funding the start-up of a Shooting Stars program in Leonora, which uses netball to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls to engage in school. Soon after, St Barbara Limited and Gold Fields’ Australia Foundation joined forces to bring the Shooting Stars’ program to the Goldfields region for the first time.
