Alfred Baku urges professional golfers to be disciplined
Accra, Dec. 2, GNA - The Executive Vice President and Head of Gold Fields Ghana Limited, West Africa Operations, Mr. Alfred Baku, has urged professional golfers to be disciplined as they partake in a four-day championship at the Damang Golf Course, Western Region.
The second edition of the Gold Fields Ghana Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Championship, which spans from 2-5 December will draw about 50 participants from Ghana and some West African countries to vie for the ultimate prize.
The prize money has been tripled from the GHâ‚µ50, 000 last year to GHâ‚µ125, 000 to motivate especially the Ghanaian golfers to make the nation proud by giving the visitors a good run.
The first 24 golfers would receive cash prizes and other souvenirs from the sponsors.
At the opening ceremony of the competition, Mr. Baku called on the professional golfers to be disciplined and eschew any form of cheating.
He said ''I'm expecting a very competitive game and also expect the professionals to be disciplined because the prize money has tripled and I know they will be keen and eager to win something but at the end of the day, I want them to be disciplined and eschew any cheating.
''By nature everybody would love to win something and some people can use foul means to win and I have being hearing a lot of complains about our professionals and it's not good and especially this year when we have some international professionals."
Mr. Baku added that, Ghana sports has been high on their Corporate Social Responsibility agenda and will help provide support for sports in the country.
The championship will also see about 35 amateur golfers play on the last two days of the competition and the Director of Real Mining Hendri le Roux noted that he expects an exciting and great showing from the professionals and the amateurs.
''We will have an exciting tournament from the professionals and the amateurs and it will be great. We are proud as a company to help sponsor the tournament and to grow the sport.
''Our company wants to show our commitment to Ghana and the mining sector in the country. This is the start of a great relationship and a great promotion of professional golf in Ghana and as we have seen the success of professional footballers around the globe, we want to see same with golf.'' He stated.
Ghana's contingent includes the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi, Achimota Golf Club, Celebrity Golf Club, Takoradi Golf Club, Tarkwa Golf Club, Obuasi Golf Club, Tema Country Golf Club and Beige Village Golf Club.
The tournament is being sponsored by Gold Fields Ghana Limited with support from Real Mining, Stellar Logistics and Connell Mining.
