Fatal accident at South Deep

Thursday, 4 June 2020

Johannesburg, 4 June 2020: It is with deep sadness that Gold Fields Limited (JSE, NYSE: GFI) has to announce that an employee at its South Deep mine in South Africa lost his life in a mining accident yesterday afternoon. Abel Magajane, a shaft timberman, succumbed from injuries sustained after falling down a reef ore-pass. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has been advised of the tragic accident and an in loco inspection, led by the DMRE with trade union representatives and mine management, was undertaken today.

This is the first fatality at Gold Fields in a year and comes amid significant improvements in the Group's safety performance over the past six years.

South Deep's HR team is providing assistance to the deceased employee's family, who will also be supported in accordance with a range of the mine's policies. The mine has stood down all activities yesterday and this morning to brief employees and to offer counselling to those in need of support.

Nick Holland, CEO of Gold Fields, said: "Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. Management will do everything possible to support them in this hour of need."
