Johannesburg, 26 July 2018: Gold Fields’ South Deep mine has handed over a new home to an elderly Bekkersdal grandmother, who looks after five of her grandchildren without any financial support. 70-year old Mrs Lemphane has been living in an informal settlement in Bekkersdal, one of South Deep’s host communities in the Rand West City Local Municipality, for over 20 years.
The donation to build the home was one of the mine’s projects to celebrate Nelson Mandela day and was funded through individual donations from South Deep employees, business partners, local infrastructure developer who donated serviced erf.
“Staying in an informal settlement with no basic facilities at her age, poses significant health and safety risks, and makes her and her grandchildren extremely vulnerable,” says Puseletso Matete, Head of Sustainable Development and Environment. Mrs Lemphane has always dreamed of owning her own home.
“I would like thank all our employees and business partners who heeded the call for the donation, which will change the life of Mrs Lemphane and her grandchildren,” Ms Matete adds. The construction of the house was undertaken by builders from the local community and created temporary employment.
