Johannesburg, 1 July 2012: Gold Fields Limited (Gold Fields) (JSE, NYSE, NASDAQ Dubai: GFI) regrets to report that five employees have lost their lives at the 4 Shaft (Ya-Rona) KDC West mine, near Merafong in South Africa, when a fire broke out last night.
The identities of the deceased are being withheld until their next of kin have been informed.
Fourteen (14) people have been admitted to hospital for routine observation and appear to be in a stable condition at this stage.
Management deeply regrets the incident and has launched a full investigation. The Department of Mineral Resources and union representatives have been informed.
The entire KDC mine has been closed until further notice. Further updates will be issued when appropriate.
