We have a long tradition of supporting sport in our local communities and host countries. For many successful years we sponsored the Ghana national football team – the Black Stars – when they reached the quarterfinals in two successive World Cups. But these investments are even more impactful at community level, where our support of local clubs and events integrates us closer into the communities and gives us an understanding of their wider needs and aspirations.

In February 2019, our Tarkwa mine in Ghana announced the reconstruction of the Tarkwa & Abosso (T&A) Park. The Park has been home to many of the football clubs around Tarkwa, including Medeama SC who play in the Ghana Premier League. But the facilities have been woefully inadequate for these clubs and the community that supports them and only seats 400 spectators.

Engineering works on the T&A Park have been completed and we can show you some of the designs for the stadium, which, when completed, will seat 10,400 spectators. The park will also have dressing rooms for teams and match officials, a commentary box and press conference area, an emergency medical room, floodlights, an electronic scoreboard, as well as access for the disabled. We are spending around US$12m-14m on the upgrade.
