Our Damang mine in Ghana this week handed over 720 bags of fertiliser to 120 cocoa farmers in its nine communities. This initiative will be funded by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation.

The Gold Fields Cocoa Input Support Programme aims to support the farmers by boosting their production and income, and sustaining and creating employment in cocoa production. The Huni Valley District office of the Cocoa, Coffee and Shea nut Growers Association collaborated with the Foundation in implementing this programme.

A committee of agriculture extension officers for the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly will monitor the use of the fertilisers.

Agricultural programmes such as these form part of our strategy to partner with communities in building economies not dependent on mining. It also aims to demonstrate that mining and agriculture can co-exist.
