Gold Fields’ South Deep mine, together with mining peer Sibanye-Stillwater and the Rand West City Local Municipality, recently hosted the top achiever awards for students who completed matric in 2017. These students are all from the Randfontein and Westonaria communities near South Deep and Sibanye’s mines on the West Rand in South Africa’s Gauteng province.

Eighty students were awarded a Mayoral Bursary at the event. South Deep and Sibanye-Stillwater also donated laptops to the top three performers of the 13 high schools in the area, as well as a laptop and a R4,000-voucher to the overall best achiever, Moeketsi Khomo from Simunye High School.
The schools participating are:

Bekkersdal and Simunye - Khotalang High, Simunye Secondary, TM Letlhake High and Hoerskool Westonaria.

Mohlakeng - Pahama High, AB Phokome High, Thuto Lekhawe High and Lukhanyo High.

Randfontein – Hoërskool Jan Viljoen, Hoërskool Riebeekrand, Randfontein High, Ithuteng Secondary and Rand View College.

Congratulations to the best performing high schools: Randfontein High School with a 100% pass rate (for the 10th consecutive year) and Phahama Senior Secondary School with a 98% pass rate. Well done also to all of the academic stars in our communities.
