SUSTAINABILITY Innovation and monitoring

Innovation, monitoring and industry collaboration

Gold Fields is committed to advancing the science and practice of tailings monitoring through collaboration, research, and the adoption of innovative technologies. We actively participate in global initiatives and continuously evaluate emerging tools to enhance the safety, reliability, and performance of our Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs).

AMIRA Project P1217: Evaluating Monitoring Technologies

Gold Fields is a major sponsor of AMIRA International's P1217 collaborative research project, which is focused on evaluating and improving TSF monitoring systems. The project aims to:

  • Catalogue and assess existing and emerging monitoring technologies
  • Install and trial selected instrumentation across sponsor sites
  • Develop digital twin models for predictive failure scenario analysis
  • Identify opportunities to develop novel sensors, such as those capable of detecting the onset of static liquefaction, a currently unmet need.

This work helps drive industry-wide improvements in how tailings risk is understood, measured, and managed.

AMIRA Project P1288: Predicting Liquafaction Risk

Gold Fields is a major sponsor of AMIRA International's P1217 collaborative research project, which is focused on predicting liquefaction risk.

The research will target poorly understood characteristics of TSFs, including their:

  • varying states of saturation,
  • high concentrations of fine particles, and
  • physical changes with age (which occur through internal mechanical and geochemical processes).

The research will examine how each characteristic can be dealt with in assessments of liquefaction propensity.

Industry collaboration and research

Gold Fields actively contributes to industry forums to help shape the future of tailings governance and innovation:

ICMM Tailings Management Working Group: Driving shared best practices across the global mining sector

ICMM Tailings Peer Network: Driving shared best practices across the global mining sector

GeoStable Tailings Consortium (GSTC): Collaborating with peers to explore the commingling of waste rock and tailings for enhanced stability and potential closure benefits

Through these initiatives, we remain at the forefront of responsible and forward-looking tailings management.
