Tarkwa (W/R), March 08, GNA - As part of efforts to assist needy but brilliant students, Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) Tarkwa Mines has awarded scholarship to 76 deserving students in its host communities to pursue various degree programmes in universities across the country.
The award, which is for the year 2019, covers tuition and hostel fees for the beneficiaries.
The recipients of the awards were selected annually from submitted applications.
Addressing stakeholders at the first quarter of the Mines Community Consultative Committee meeting, the Sustainable Development Manager of Tarkwa Mine, Mr. Robert Siaw, said this year's scholarship cost $ 40,000.00.
He stated that GFGL currently, they have 1,382 scholarship holders whose scholarships will cost them 1.4 million dollars.
He urged the awardees to be 'shining stars' in their schools and also serve as role models to students in their respective communities.
"Am urging you to get first class and second class upper because you are already outstanding students", Mr. Siaw added.
He emphasised that Gold Fields would not hesitate to withdraw the scholarship from any students who under perform.
Mr Siaw stated that: "It will be a disgrace if you do not learn and rather get hooked onto your mobile phones, WhatsApp and facebook, which will take the best out of you".
The Municipal Director of Education for Prestea Huni-Valley, Mrs Marvie Colerangle-Ashun on her part, entreated the students to leave up to expectation to enable them enjoy the scholarship to the end of their academic programme.
She further beseeched the students to exhibit the core values of Goldfields Tarkwa Mines in their schools and communities.
Nana Kwasi Ansah, Chief of Brahabebom thanked Gold Fields for introducing the programme to help more needy and brilliant students to get the chance to fulfil their dreams.
