South Deep Achieves ISO 55001 Certification, Setting a New Benchmark for Asset Management Excellence

Monday, 20 April 2026

Gold Fields’ South Deep Gold Mine has achieved a significant milestone by earning ISO 55001 certification for asset management, reinforcing its position as a leader in operational excellence and modern mining practices.

This achievement makes South Deep the first Gold Fields operation globally to be certified to the ISO 55001 standard and one of the first mines in the South African mining industry to reach this level of asset management maturity.

The certification marks a powerful moment in South Deep’s transformation into a modern, mechanised and performance‑driven operation, underpinned by strong governance, improved systems and disciplined execution.

“This achievement demonstrates the growing maturity of South Deep and positions our operation as a benchmark for the industry in South Africa. It proves that when we align our efforts and commit to doing things right, we can deliver sustainable performance we can all be proud of,” said Clair Nel, South Deep Asset Manager.

This milestone is the result of a focused, business‑wide effort to strengthen asset management practices across the mine. Key initiatives include embedding structured lifecycle asset management, enabling risk‑based decision‑making, and standardising work practices with clear accountability across the organisation.

Supported by strong leadership and close collaboration across engineering, maintenance, planning and operations, South Deep’s asset management framework is aligned with internationally recognised standards, including ISO 50001 (Energy Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety).

The impact of this integrated approach is already evident. South Deep is seeing improved asset reliability and availability, more accurate budgeting and cost control, reduced unplanned downtime, and stronger, data‑driven decision‑making. Collectively, these gains are enhancing operational performance while supporting long‑term sustainability and value creation.
