Gold Fields aims to obtain permits this year to explore in Moquegua, Peru - Trend Detail

Friday, 19 January 2024

The executive vice president of Gold Fields Americas Region, Luis Rivera, highlighted the company’s plans in Peru. With Cerro Corona (Cajamarca) already consolidated, he aims to intensify his exploration plans.

On the Special Mining Thursday, the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP), showed enthusiasm for the work they do in Moquegua.

"We believe that the potential is high, and it should give us surprises. If the permits advance, during this year, we can explore and that would be very interesting," said the executive.

Next, Rivera explained that in Moquegua the company has a large number of hectares under concession. He added that geological models indicate that the deposits are of high sulfidation, similar to those existing in northern Chile.

It is, then, a projection of potential gold deposits that reach the north of Chile, where the El Indio and Maricunga mines are located. That belt – Rivera continues – crosses Moquegua and Puno. "We are excited about those properties and the geochemical results they have had to date," he noted.

The former president of the IIMP also said that they hope this year to drill and have diamond results that they can announce to the market. "You have to be very patient in mining," he stressed.

To begin exploration work, Gold Fields aims to obtain the Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) this year.

Plans and progress

Rivera made it clear that exploration is one of the great objectives of the company that operates the Cerro Corona mine in Peru. In this sense, he revealed that they have an allocation of US$20 million for exploration tasks and depending on the results it could be expanded, although with the approval of its directors.

Precisely, Rivera revealed that Gold Fields is very active around Cerro Corona in properties they own in an area immediately around the pit. "We are first establishing a relationship with the communities," he said.

Exploration tasks extend to Áncash where they are partners with Chakana Resources. In this case, they already have the approved EIS to explore. "We have expectations," he emphasized.

Cerro Corona in sight

The executive also indicated that in the case of Cerro Corona, the work is focused on extending the life of the mine. "It is a very mature activity, and in 2024 and 2025 we will continue mining," he told the IIMP.

Production will remain at 200 thousand ounces of gold. "There is still a very good operation, very efficient, but obviously what we always say, it begins to progressively reduce activities until 2030 when we are alive. So that is why we are very focused on our exploration activities in the north and south of Peru," he concluded.
