West Rand shelter gets a revamp, and more, thanks to South Deep - Randfontein Herald

Tuesday, 8 August 2023

Mining company Gold Fields was all hands on deck recently and visited Philani Safe Haven for Boys to do some renovation work last month.

According to the founder of the shelter, Phyllis Malope, besides the revamp, they also received a donation of 20 single beds, 40 blankets and duvet covers, as well as tables and chairs among other items. The mine then planted a vegetable garden and donated two water tanks that will ensure that the centre does not run out of the precious commodity.

This was part of the company’s Corporate Social Investment programme and a way to show love to the community during Madiba Month. The shelter is an NGO that takes care of abandoned and neglected children between the age group of six and 18.

Speaking to the Randfontein Herald, Phyllis said that she is thrilled to have had such a visit from the mining company and feels their efforts and donations will assist a great deal.

“We are grateful towards Gold Fields. They not only care for the people of the centre but for the whole of Rand West. We’ve seen that they even care for the children who do not have parents and this is truly heartwarming. We are truly thankful for the donations and what they’ve done. We are blessed,” said Malope, who added that the work done is commendable.
