OPERATIONS Ghana

Ghana

Two operations, including Africa’s largest open pit gold mine

We operate two gold mines, Tarkwa and Damang, in Ghana’s Ashanti Gold Belt. Tarkwa mine is among the largest in Africa, contributing significantly to the local economy and supporting communities. Our Damang mine is treating stockpiles as we consider its options for future growth or closure.

Mines

The Government of Ghana owns a 10% free-carry shareholding in our mines:

  • Tarkwa: Open-pit
    Life-of-mine (LOM): 13 years

In 2023, we entered into an agreement with AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) to form a JV comprising the adjacent Tarkwa and Iduapriem mines, with Gold Fields having a majority share. The merger is awaiting the go-ahead from the Ghana government. Negotiations are ongoing
  • Damang: Open-pit
    LOM: 1 year

Rehabilitation

Committed environmental protection through rehabilitation of mine-impacted land and robust water management practices. Damang’s closed tailings dam has been converted to agricultural land for the benefit of host communities

Community impact

Strong partnerships with local communities, with a focus on host community procurement and employment, and investment in education, health and infrastructure. Gold Fields’ two largest infrastructure projects are located in Ghana: The tarred Tarkwa-Damang road and the refurbished TnA football stadium

Key stakeholder numbers
