SUSTAINABILITY Foundations and trusts
In South Africa we collaborate with the trustees of the independent South Deep Education Trust, the South Deep Community Trust and the Westonaria Community Trust to facilitate more effective delivery of projects that benefit host and labour sending communities. The South Deep Education Trust and the South Deep Community Trust, together with the employee-based Thusano Trust, were established as part of South Deep’s 2010 Black Economic Empowerment initiative.
In Australia and Ghana our community initiatives are channelled through the Gold Fields Australia Foundation and the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation respectively. The trustees of these foundations comprise independent representatives as well as representatives from Gold Fields.
Below is a brief profile of the trusts and foundations that Gold Fields works with.
During 2020 the Gold Fields Australia Foundation is being deregistered and its funds have been donated. The Australian operations will provide ongoing support to communities in line with their community investment framework.

The WCT was wound up in 2019. The WCT transferred the amount of R12m to the South Deep Education Trust, to be ring-fenced and to be utilised specifically for the purpose of building a TVET college in Westonaria. Representatives of the WCT are still, and will in future be actively involved in the planning and execution of the building of the TVET college. The WCT is a funder together with other funders for this project.
