SUSTAINABILITY Foundations and trusts

Foundations and trusts

Gold Fields funds and works with associated foundations and community trusts to deliver social investment projects that share value created by our operations with host communities.

In South Africa we collaborate with the trustees of the independent South Deep Education Trust and the South Deep Community Trust to facilitate more effective delivery of projects that benefit host and labour sending communities. The South Deep Education Trust and the South Deep Community Trust, together with the employee-based Thusano Trust, were established as part of South Deep’s 2010 Black Economic Empowerment initiative.

In Ghana our community initiatives are channelled through the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation. The trustees of this foundation comprise independent representatives as well as representatives from Gold Fields.

Below is a brief profile of the trusts and foundations that Gold Fields works with.

South Deep Trusts

In 2010, Gold Fields in South Africa set up two independent, though interconnected, trusts through which to disburse resources and support the communities in the various municipal wards neighbouring the South Deep operation, as well as those from labour-sending areas in the provinces of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

The South Deep Education Trust and South Deep Community Trust are part of South Deep’s Black Economic Empowerment ownership structure and receives an annual dividend income from the mine. Each Trust has a specific scope of work that is ultimately intended to empower communities to be self-sufficient.
